Starting in September, I will embark on a “compositional sabbatical.” After 20 years of writing music on commission, I feel it is time to step back and reflect on both my past work and the future direction of my career.

At the heart of this period of reflection lies the creation of a new piece—one written entirely without commission. It will take the form of a concerto for clarinet and orchestra, inspired by the Chinese philosophy of Wuxing, or the “Five Transformations.”
